April is a Family Affair

The April Earth Day Open on Saturday the 22nd turned out to be the a snappy event, as players zipped through six consecutive rounds with a break only to switch courts. The weather provided a comfortable backdrop of partly cloudy skies and light winds. When it was all over, the George Family took home the prizes [drawing a bottle of Champagne and a classic Evert-Navrátilová match DVD] as Robin George topped second-placer Amy Guthrie by two games and Steve George tied Dennis Murphy [who drew two tickets to the upcoming NCAA Finals at Stanford] for honors on the men's side.

A number of participants, including a full compliment of Georges, met for an alfresco pub lunch afterwards at Marvin Gardens. This tournament featured the debut of Steve and Pat "Cookesey" Schery as event provisioners and we were rewarded with creative prizes and a great selection of fresh fruit to go along with waters and other drinks.

The next tournament, The Spanish Open, will be played on Saturday, May 20th with a Spanish Tapas-themed social that evening. There is an open play [which will probably not be rained out] on Saturday, May 13th.
