Good Ol' Time at Southern Comfort Open

The RSTC June Southern Comfort Open featured separate men's and women's events as well as spirited play on a warm (and sometimes cool) windy day.

Social Hostess (and, along with husband Jay, courtside refreshment provider) Irene Muzio topped the women at Shorebird Courts, followed closely by Kathy Miles and Cynthia Hunton, who tied for silver. Over at Quay Courts, Dolphin Park, John Jordan steamrolled most of the loyal opposition while Ivan Quinones garnished second in a decidedly left-handed manner, playing as he does in a "sinistro" manner.

The unusual tennis social theme came about after Hostess Muzio's recent return from Atlanta and the realization that she had not eaten any authentic "Southern" food there. Given a challenge, the intrepid RSTC partygoers responded with such representative fare as fried chicken, baby back and short ribs, grits, and corn salad, finished off with a variety of just desserts.

The champions of the day received prizes ranging from the regionally and musically-inspired Tupelo Honey, Texas Chili starter, Carolina and "Deep South" barbecue sauces and a Memphis dry rub, ensuring that the rewards of participating in the Southern Comfort Open will extend to a few more smoky summer days.

Besides kudos to the ubiquitous Muzios, special thanks to John Jordan, John Hogan and Jeanette Collins for helping makes things go.
