Karen Brodersen and Laurie Coleman claimed first and second place honors at the Shorebird courts while Dennis Murphy and Rudi Kain finished on top at Dolphin Park [aka "Quay"]. The results were somewhat overshadowed by what was first thought to be an amusing pratfall. Kristian Nergaard took a spectacular spill hustling after an spinning angled drop shot. The experienced skier fell head-first but instinctively managed to tuck arms and roll over. He continued to play the final few rounds, noting some soreness and a lack of extension range on his service motion. At the Saturday night hillside Oktoberfest hosted by Joe and Florence Rust, Kristian appeared with both an improvised arm sling and a special Norwegian festival hat and joined in the fun. Only the following Monday did word come back that ribs were cracked and a bone in the elbow broken. We all wish Herr Nergaard a speedy recovery.
As food themes go, the RSTC Oktoberfest challenges cooks to think outside the wurst, and the entree results this year were very impressive, with a fruited pork loin roll joining Alsatian chicken, buttered spaetzle and sauerbraten feeding hungry partygoers. After an elaborate dessert, awards of wines from the past two year's Redwood Shores Wine Club vintages were handed out to the lucky wieners.
